What Happened?

On September 14th, 1919, Team Manager McPhaul boarded the train and took his team to Hagemeister Park in Green Bay Wisconsin to play the Indian Packing Co. team led by team captain "Curly" Lambeau.

Who Won?

Two Small Towns

What Happened?

In what would be a lopsided game, Menominee never made it past midfield if the stories are true.  The North End A.C. was soundly defeated by the Indian Packing Co.

Final Score:

NEAC            0

Packers       53

Two Small Towns

Both teams came from small towns during the era when football was new and community teams were associated with clubs or whoever would sponsor them.  Green Bay had a population of about 30,000 in 1919 and is still the smallest city to own any professional team.  And Menominee is still roughly the same size it was in 1919 (pop. 9000)

1918 Season

Interestingly enough, a team from Marinette-Menominee played the city team from Green Bay in 1918.   In fact, city teams were formed many years before.   But this site is to highlight the First Game of the Green Bay Packers.   As Menominee Michigan is only 45 miles north of Green Bay (as the bird flies).

The result of the 1918 game was a 0 - 0 tie.

1920 Season

According to the Green Bay Press Gazette Sept. 14, 1920, the packers were scheduled to play  the "East End Badgers" from Marninette.  Two days later they were called the "North End Badgers" with no mention of Menominee.

Eventually both cites would play  with slightly better results than a year before.

Green Bay Packers defeated the Marinette Professionals  25 - 0 on Oct. 17th and the Menominee Professionals 19 - 7 on Nov. 21st.

Scheduling an opponent for the opening date of Sept. 14th was proving to be difficult.   As was reported in the Green Bay Press Gazette on Sept 2nd, there were three team in consideration Oconto, De Pere or the Oneida Indians.

By the 4th, De Pere and Oconto had backed out.

The "East End" team from Menominee is first mentioned on Sept. 5th.  and then on the 6th, the are called the "East Ends, a strong eleven from from North Menominee"

By Sept. 9th, we see the first mention of the "North End A.C."  playing the Indian Packing Corporation team.

In the Sept. 13 Press Gazette, the Green Bay teams is referred to both as "Indians" and "Packers".
